As many of us have heard by now, U.S. military commanders have reportedly been justifying America’s attack on Iran by invoking Bible prophecy – this according to a series of complaints made to a religious watchdog group.
But what if I told you that these military commanders are not only misunderstanding what the Bible teaches us, but that they actually helping to spread evil? Here’s what I mean.
This story was originally reported a few days back by independent journalist Jonathan Larsen, who cited complaints filed with the Military Religious Freedom Foundation. Those complaints detailed how some U.S. military leaders believe they’re fulfilling Bible prophecy.
The Military Religious Freedom Foundation, or MRFF, said it has received numerous complaints from service members all across the United States Armed Forces.
One complainant told MRFF that their commander had urged them to tell the troops that this was ‘all part of God’s divine plan’ and he specifically referenced numerous citations out of the Book of Revelation referring to Armageddon and the imminent return of Jesus Christ.
The non-commissioned officer, or NCO, who made the complaint also said that the commander had told them that, and I quote: “President Trump has been anointed by Jesus to light the signal fire in Iran to cause Armageddon and mark His return to Earth.”
The NCO’s complaint was filed on behalf of 15 troops, including 11 Christians, one Muslim person and one Jewish person. This brings up an important point: many of those who are complaining about what these military leaders have said, are in fact Christian themselves.
The Military Religious Freedom Foundation states that its mission is to ensure that members of the United States Armed Forces are able to practice their religious beliefs without fear of discrimination or coercion, and to promote the separation of church and state within the military.
The president of the MRFF is a man named Mikey Weinstein, a U.S. Air Force veteran, and Weinstein has said that “Anytime Israel or the US is involved in the Middle East, we get this stuff about Christian nationalists who’ve taken over our government, and certainly our US military.”
Here is a part of the original email that was sent to MRFF by the NCO:
“This morning our commander opened up the combat readiness status briefing by urging us to not be ‘afraid’ as to what is happening with our combat operations in Iran right now.
He urged us to tell our troops that this was ‘all part of God’s divine plan’ and he specifically referenced numerous citations out of the Book of Revelation referring to Armageddon and the imminent return of Jesus Christ.
He said that ‘President Trump has been anointed by Jesus to light the signal fire in Iran to cause Armageddon and mark his return to Earth.’”
This type of rhetoric from U.S. military leaders also comes after other members of the Trump Administration recently revealed their perspective on the middle east as being a religious war.
For example, Mike Huckabee, the US ambassador to Israel, told Tucker Carlson during an interview last month that it would be “fine” if Israel took the entire Middle East because it was promised the land in the Bible.
Last Monday U.S. Secretary of Defense, excuse me, I mean Secretary of War Pete Hegseth said: “crazy regimes like Iran, hell-bent on prophetic Islamist delusions, cannot have nuclear weapons.”
This was followed up on Tuesday by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who said without a hint of irony: “Iran is run by lunatics – religious fanatic lunatics.”
Getting back to the original reporting on Jonathan Larsen’s Substack, which I have a link below in the comments, here a couple of excerpts stood out.
“A combat-unit commander told non-commissioned officers at a briefing Monday that the Iran war is part of God’s plan … From Saturday morning through Monday night, more than 110 similar complaints about commanders in every branch of the military had been logged by the Military Religious Freedom Foundation.”
“Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has enshrined evangelical Christianity at the uppermost levels of the U.S. military, airing monthly prayer meetings throughout the Pentagon. Last year, the Pentagon confirmed to me that Hegseth attends a weekly White House Bible study. It’s led by a preacher who says God commands America to support Israel.”
So, let’s talk about the idea that the Iran war is part of God’s prophecy and that we should always support Israel. As it turns out, if we look a bit closer at what the Bible really says, we run into two fundamental problems.
The first problem is with the claim that we should support Israel unconditionally, which comes from a misreading of Genesis 12:3. Here’s that verse.
“And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.”
This verse is actually God speaking directly to Abraham, not to the nation of Israel. In fact, it was Jacob who was the father of the twelve tribes that constituted the nation of Israel.
Even if it is interpreted to mean that God is speaking about Israel, the verse makes it clear that it’s GOD who is doing the blessing and the cursing. There is no command for us to do likewise.
The second problem is the notion that our own actions are a necessary part of Bible prophecy being fulfilled. That we have a role in bringing about these prophecies. Or, to put it another way, God simply can’t do it without us.
Rather, as the Bible makes clear, prophecy is fulfilled according to God’s sovereign, predetermined timeline, not human schedules. Prophecy is fulfilled on GOD’S terms, not ours.
The mindset that our actions are necessary to fulfill the Bible’s prophecies is simply our projecting onto God what WE want to see on OUR schedule.
For example, if we take the prophecies relating to how Israel is to possess certain land in the middle east, the Bible clearly teaches us that this relates to when we’re in the millennial kingdom, not to how present-day borders may change under human government.
Underlying the mistaken belief that we must support Israel unconditionally, and that our own actions can help bring about God’s prophecy, is a third problem. Actually, it’s much more than a problem. It is a delusion.
I’m referring to the “Trump is chosen by God” delusion, which runs rampant throughout so much of the right, especially with Evangelical Christians. This has been building for years, as evidenced by Paula White’s statement that if you say no to Trump, you’re saying no to God.
This is at the very heart of the issue with large numbers of Christians. They believe that Trump was chosen by God, therefor whatever Trump wants is what God wants. And by extension, anyone who opposes Trump, opposes God.
This is why we heard U.S. military leaders not only say that the war on Iran is part of Bible prophecy, but that Trump is the one who has been anointed by Jesus to help bring about the Second Coming.
They are projecting ONTO God the things that they themselves believe or want to be true. Whether that’s intentional or unintentional remains to be seen, but by doing this they are helping to spread the strong delusion among believers.
The strong delusion leads to a falling away from the faith, and there will not be a bigger reason for Christians falling away from the faith than the lie that the man who lines up with the biblical descriptions of the Antichrist was chosen by God.
Once you understand that, you’ll be able to see that the arrival of the Antichrist on the scene is not something that is still in the future. Instead, he is directly in front of us, right now.
