The Irony of Christians Playing the Powerball Lottery

As many of us have heard, the latest Powerball jackpot has now grown to be over $1.6 billion dollars, which makes it the largest lottery prize in world history. Of course, the $1.6 billion jackpot would be paid out over 30 years, not immediately, but it’s still an staggering amount of money.

If the winner chooses to take it in all cash up front, the payout would be $782 million dollars. But then you do also have a monstrous federal tax deduction, which is about $290 million dollars, leaving you with approximately $490 million dollars in the end.

Just to let you know, in case you’re hoping to hit it big, the odds of winning the Powerball jackpot are over 292 million to 1. To put that number in perspective, your chance of getting hit by lightning in your lifetime is only about 15,000 to 1.

That makes your odds of getting struck by lightning nearly 20,000 times better than hitting the winning numbers for the Powerball jackpot. Or to put it another way, you would need to be hit by lighting 250 times to equal the odds of winning the Powerball just once.

If being hit 250 times by lightning isn’t your cup of tea, you also have a 1 in 3.7 million chance of being eaten by a shark. That would need to happen about 80 times to equal the odds of winning the Powerball just once, and that’s also not too likely.

We see so many people, including many Christians, playing these kind of lotteries but having no grasp at how next to impossible it is to win it. The odds are better that you would be hit multiple times by lightning AND then get eaten by a shark before it would happen!

But here’s the ironic thing about Christians getting all revved up about this lottery. Christians have ALREADY won the ultimate lottery. They have gained eternal life by asking forgiveness from God, and accepting Jesus into their lives as savior. And, by faith they are saved by the grace of God.
