Advertisements Appearing on YouTube Videos

You may, or may not, have started to see advertisements on my YouTube videos in recent weeks. To quickly give you some background: Last June YouTube notified their video creators that they had the “Right to Monetize”, which meant they could show ads on any video they wanted to. Even if that particular channel was not part of YouTube’s Partner Program.

Channels that were not monetized prior to that announcement were still subject to having ads shown on their videos. There simply wasn’t a choice, as YouTube held all the cards. Furthermore, YouTube would not share any profits from those ads with those channels, as they weren’t in the Partner Program. As one might imagine, non-monetized channels didn’t like that arrangement one bit.

I certainly kept an eye on my channel in the months after that announcement. But I didn’t really see any ads popping up during the remainder of 2021. In fact, my impression was that between my channel being rather small, and how I talked about Trump being the Antichrist, it was rather unlikely that any advertiser would WANT their ads on my videos.

However, since the beginning of 2022, I have indeed started to see ads appear before my videos. I’m curious if this may be happening with other non-monetized channels as well, although I haven’t really looked into this as of yet.

Opting in to YPP allows me to control advertisements

So, what I’ve decided to do is to opt-in to YouTube’s Partner Program, which allows me more control over this aspect of my channel. By opting in, I am able to prevent ads from showing at the end of videos, and also make sure that any ads before the video can be skipped over. So no one has to sit through, for example, a 15 second or 30 second commercial for car insurance.

By opting-in, I can also prevent ads from showing up WITHIN the video. And that’s always been the worst part of YouTube ads, in my opinion. You just start to get into a particular video, and then two minutes in, probably mid-sentence, it’s interrupted with a couple of commercials. And then that happens again a few minutes later with yet another ad.

If you DO see any ads, it should only be at the beginning which you can easily skip over to get to the video. There aren’t ads within or at the end of the videos.

I doubt that most of you will see advertisements anyway. Because as I said, this is a small channel, and the subject of Donald J. Trump being the Antichrist is most likely not high on the list of content that advertisers love!
