Many of you will recognize the title of this video, Something Wicked This Way Comes, as being a line from Shakespeare’s MacBeth. Although it is also the title of a 1962 novel by Ray Bradbury, and a 1983 Disney movie, which was based on the novel.
In MacBeth, the line “By the pricking of my thumbs, something wicked this way comes” is uttered by one of three witches, and it’s in reference to King MacBeth about to return to them. In Shakespeare’s play, MacBeth had turned into a wicked man – something that the witches themselves had helped to create.
The words “pricking of my thumbs” mean to have a foreboding or intuitive feeling that something is about to happen – often something bad.
But beyond MacBeth, there’s a more important biblical allusion here, as well. You see, the title of this video, Something Wicked This Way Comes, is actually a reference to Proverbs 6, and to a passage called The Wicked Man.
A worthless person, a wicked man,
Walks with a perverse mouth;
He winks with his eyes,
shuffles his feet,
He points with his fingers;
Perversity is in his heart,
He devises evil continually,
He sows discord.
Proverbs 6 describes a man who is utterly evil in so many ways. From having a perverse mouth, to accusing others of things he does, to having perversity in his heart, to even sowing discord. And in fact, many Bible scholars view these verses as a reference to the Antichrist – the final Wicked Man.
These descriptions of this wicked man are also echoed in Psalm 36:
“There is no fear of God before his eyes.
For he flatters himself in his own eyes,
When he finds out his iniquity and when he hates.
The words of his mouth are wickedness and deceit;
He has ceased to be wise and to do good.
He devises wickedness on his bed;
He sets himself in a way that is not good;
He does not abhor evil.”
The words “he devises evil continually” in Proverbs 6, and “he devises wickedness on his bed” in Psalm 36, tells us of a man who is ALWAYS plotting evil. It is simply what he does.
Those two verses are reinforced by Micah 2:1, where we have this: “Woe to them that devise iniquity, and work evil upon their beds! when the morning is light, they practise it, because it is in the power of their hand.”
What makes all these verses about a wicked man who works evil upon his bed so relevant, is that in a 1992 interview in New York magazine, Donald Trump said this: “I’m a guy who lies awake at night and thinks and plots.”
He then also referenced the fact that he does not need a lot of sleep, at first saying it’s a gift, before adding “It’s a gift from hell.”
Donald Trump is a notoriously vengeful man – but he’s much more than someone simply seeking payback. Instead, when Trump is attacked he will punch back 10 times harder. It’s EXTREME revenge. It’s retribution on steroids.
We can be sure that right now Trump is plotting his revenge against all his perceived enemies – and make no mistake about it – his enemies list is a mile long. And after yesterday’s guilty verdicts in his New York trial, that enemies list just got even longer.
He is now plotting his revenge against the prosecutor, the judge, the witnesses against him, and even the Department of Justice and the Biden Administration. Anyone and everyone who has ever attacked him is on his enemies list.
The Antichrist is a wicked man who continually devises evil, and he will not rest until he has his revenge many times over. His wrath is coming, even against true Christians who recognize him for what he is.
But as we head into these turbulent times over the coming months and years, no true Christian should fear what is to come upon the world, for we have this promise from God Almighty:
“Fear not, for I am with you;
Be not dismayed, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you,
Yes, I will help you,
I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.”
Yes, something wicked this way comes, but rest assured, something much better comes after that: the return of our Lord Jesus Christ. ♦
