Several media outlets are now reporting that Trump might announce his 2024 presidential bid unusually early, with a couple of conservative websites stating that it could happen in just a couple of days, on the Fourth of July.
While Trump’s announcement of his 2024 presidential run was originally expected to happen later this year, somewhere around the November mid-terms, he is now said to be concerned that waiting until then will further damage his brand.
In recent weeks the January 6th committee’s investigation into his efforts to cling to power after losing the 2020 election has resulted in a number of remarkable, negative, and headline-grabbing stories in the media.
By announcing his presidential run sooner rather than later, Trump feels that he can not only regain the spotlight and get the media attention needed to fight back against the January 6th investigations, but that he can also “clear the field” of other republican presidential hopefuls.
Of course, while that field might include such republican hopefuls as Mike Pence, Tom Cotton, Rick Scott, Mike Pompeo, Nikki Haley, and a few others, the REAL threat to Trump is Governor Ron DeSantis of Florida.
The Trump vs. DeSantis fight almost seems to an inevitability, as DeSantis is consistently seen as the only one who could potentially beat out Trump for the republican nomination. Most polls, however, still have Trump comfortably ahead of DeSantis in such a matchup.
If and when a Trump vs. DeSantis primary fight actually happens, it would truly rock the republican party, with Trump himself doing most of the rocking. Trump’s willingness to play dirty and overtly lie would once again be on full display for the nation to see.
The other aspect of Trump’s announcement is that it could come as early as the Fourth of July. This continues his theme of over-the-top patriotism that resonates with many conservatives, especially evangelical Christians.
In fact, in many conservative circles Trump is viewed as being SO patriotic that he is synonymous WITH America. And if you truly love America, you will truly love Trump. It can best be summed up as “Trump is America and America is Trump.”
If saying “Trump is America and America is Trump” sounds vaguely familiar from history, it should. A very similar statement was made nearly 90 years ago.
In 1934 Rudolf Hess addressed about a million Nazi Party officials who were gathered to swear an oath to Adolf Hitler. In his speech Hess said, “Adolf Hitler is Germany and Germany is Adolf Hitler. He who pledges himself to Hitler pledges himself to Germany.”
And I believe this exact same thing with Trump is where we’re headed as a nation. It’s an ultra-patriotism that mixes the identity of a nation with the cult of personality surrounding one man.
I believe that there’s going to come a time in the very near future when the refrain of “Trump is America and America is Trump” will be commonplace. Even more than that, “he who pledges himself to Trump, pledges himself to America.”
By extension, those who DON’T pledge themselves to Trump will have committed treason against America. And we already know what Trump and his supporters think should happen to those who commit treason.
